A four door Chevrolet Cavalier. good gas mileage and good performance on the 2.0-2.5 cylinder engines with a five speed manual. Plus, being a J-body car, you can get parts off of Cadillacs and Pontiac's to use instead in case you can't find a cavalier at the salvage yard.

Anything cheap. The two pieces that make up insurance price are cost of car and riskiness of driver. Statistically, teens are very risky, so the lower the cost of your car, the better from a collision perspective.
