I just read a Yahoo news report that the poppy harvest is the highest in years.

I understand that the landscape of Afghanistan is extremely challenging, so this would be a really difficult and expensive undertaking. Basically a good idea, of course.
One reason poppy is such a popular crop is that, transportation being so difficult, they need something that is valuable in small quantities. If we could access all the poppy fields to destroy them, we could access them for other purposes as well, and people could make a living in a more conventional manner.
Building the infrastructure for transporting more beneficial goods will be hard and expensive, but it is really necessary.
