You are probably allergic to nickel which is used in jewelry.

Silver is usually mixed w/ a bit of copper to make sterling silver so it might be okay for you.

FYI, www.simplywhispers.com has information about allergies and sells nickel free jewelry.

First of all DO NOT try on the earrings in the store. Unless you have rubbing alcohol handy to clean them, you do not want to put them in your ears otherwise you could add infection to your problems. Sterling silver is a safe way to go but make sure that the package or post board says "sterling silver" on it. If it does not say this then it is not sterling silver, this usually lets you know if its "fake" or not. You could also try Nickel Free jewelry, again it will be labeled Nickel Free on the package. I know a few people who have sensitive skin when it comes to gold or white gold (which would be my next suggestion if the S.S. or N.F. don't work). If you are sensitive to those your next bet is platinum or tungsten. Of course, gold, white gold, and platinum are going to cost you more and from what I've heard on tungsten it isn't expensive.

Actually, sterling silver would probably be your best bet. This is a higher quality silver and shouldn't irritate your skin as much as cheaper materials. If you notice any itching or redness with sterling silver, however, try gold. Hope this helps!

My mom has to go by a piece by piece basis - some gold makes her break out and so does some silver. You can try the sterling, but make sure you can return it or try it on in the store for a while.
