As mentioned, MD schools have more prestige so they can get more students with higher MCAT scores. But D.O. schools don't take everybody that applies either. That is a myth, and if you don't work hard to get a decent MCAT score then you won't even get an interview. D.O. programs are good and legitimate medical schools. And there are plenty of practicing D.O.'s out there that are quite successful.

Because Ostopathic med schools and osteopaths in general do not have the reputation of MD's. Some people think the approach is quackery although I've known some awesome osteopathic physicians.

Many people consider an MD to be more prestigious than a DO. Therefore, the DO programs tend to get filled up with students who couldn't get into an MD program. They tend to have lower MCAT scores.

MD schools are more competitive than DO schools, one reason is that MD schools only have a certain number of students they will let in, and they stick to that number. DO schools on the other hand, will let all those who qualify in. Also, let's face it..if you have an MD behind your name you will have more respect in the medical field than if you have a DO behind your name.
