A PhD in English is designed to prepare you for a career in research of that subject. It's designed to prepare you for a career in academia, and not for much else. You'd be qualified to teach at university, if you could find a job in the field - not so easy to do. Otherwise, you may be qualified for jobs that wouldn't require a PhD, necessarily, depending on your field. For example, you may find a job in a library, or in publishing, but again, those wouldn't have required you to get the PhD. Some may also be wary of hiring you BECAUSE you have a PhD.

You could perhaps work in academia, but in a non-teaching role. Many of those jobs require a PhD, or prefer it - but don't specify which field. This could be something you'd want to look into. If it's of interest, make sure you get some work experience in the field while you're in school.

So, if you're planning to do a PhD in English, make sure that you go into it with the realities of the situation in mind. 1) There are few academic jobs available 2) There are far too many candidates for those jobs 3) the PhD in English won't qualify you for anything except academia, and 4) Only do it because you really, really want to, for personal reasons, because the chance of you making any money out of the results are fairly slim.

Lastly, in my personal opinion, unless money isn't a concern for you and you're doing the PhD for personal fulfillment only, attend the best reputed school you can which offers you the most money. (To put it bluntly, don't go unless you're fully funded.) Because if you graduate with $1000/month in loan payments, and can't find a job in your field for 4-5 years (not unusual in humanities), then you are in deep, deep trouble.

A link with advice from PhD English students is attached. I think you'd benefit from reading through what they say. You can then make an educated choice.

You shouldn't get a PhD in any field unless you know that you want to do research for the rest of your life.

For a PhD in English -- this means a life as a professor, as a writer or in publishing.

If none of these interest you -- don't get a PhD.
