so many types of jazz too... be it funky, old chicago style, bebop, fusion, .... so many definitions

no idea how to define it but it sure is godsend music and root to many wonderfull offspring music. No jazz = no "living"

Jazz is the first true America music style. Jazz was evolved from the Blues and expressed with political overtones. Jazz is built on improv. A group with exceptional musical ability and great communication and understanding read each other and run with a song. Usually "composed" by a band leader, the song is built on everyone's unique perception.

Jazz is so varied... the word is too vague... There is Dixieland Jazz, Swing Jazz, Be Bop Jazz, Free Jazz, Acid Jazz, etc etc etc

The one thing they seem to all have in common is they all encourage improvised soloing by some of the musicians in the band...
