in the older movies and shows, the men are almost always wearing a suit and tie no matter what they are doing. Do you remember if they really did dress like this in real life. I saw a Leave it to Beaver episode once where Ward Cleaver was wearing a white dress shirt and tie while he was Bar b quing.

LOL. You never saw June wearing pants either did you? I know when I was in school the women teachers all had to wear a dress and the men teachers had to wear ties and dress shirts. Now you can't tell them from the janitors.

Yes, they did. It was nearly unheard of to see older men (or women, for that matter, in dresses) in anything other than a button-down shirt, with most in ties, depending on their occupation, mainly. It just goes to show how much our society has degenerated to see 70 and 80-year-old men (and women) today wearing jeans and tennis shoes, which also makes them look ridiculous, in my view!

I heard of a preacher back in the 1980's who cut his lawn in a shirt and tie, which is the opposite extreme. The spirit of this age is a CASUAL one, and people (especially Americans) wear jeans as a (popular) uniform, much as Mao suits were worn by everyone in China during his reign-I laugh when I hear folks today talking about being 'unique and individualistic'-how, by looking like a clone of everyone else walking down the street??!

that is interesting isn't it? My own Grandfather was like that..Whenever he'd go in public he wore a tie & hat, dressed like an white collar worker just going to the grocery store..=)At home he was more casual though...plus I remember us girls couldn't even wear jeans to school until I was a junior in high school..we could wear pants in 9th grade but not denim ones..weird huh?
anyway cool Q man..

What puzzles me is how June Cleaver could cook, vacuum and garden in dress, hose and heals.
