I think it would be all right for a middle name, but not as a first name. I have a grandson named Austen. I would imagine that a girl would find having a boy's name a hindrance at some point in her life. We need to think very carefully about the names we give our children. You should read FREAKONOMICS. It has a chapter on the importance of names to the future and well-being of a child during his or her lifetime. Read it, and you won't name your daughter Austen.

Congratulations on your new baby. Joy and peace to you and yours.
It's just my opinion, but Austen is a boys name. (It's also the capitol of Texas, if you change one letter.)
I like solid names. I have 3 kids: Sam, Charlotte, and Iris. Sam is 16 and knows himself quite well for a boy his age. He has a healthy amount of self-confidence: not too much and not too little. Charlotte is 11 and is bookish. Iris is 9 and is a bit flighty. I wonder if their names have anything to do with the way they seem to be turning out?
Naming is - as you know - very important. The child will have it always.
Our name marks us.
The act of naming shouldn't be taken lightly.

My sister named her girl Olivia Austin - I think it's a great name for a girl albeit a traditionally male name

That's definately a boys name. Sorry. Don't do that to her. But keep it in mind if the sonogram was wrong. How about Kirsten? It's similar. Or Abigail? Sophia? Hope? Amelia?
