It also has to be wrapped in the same direction the nut turns back on

Unscrewq and lift up the packing nut. If possible, remove any bad packing you can. You can either wrap the new packing around the stem or cut it long enough to wrap around the stem and ends come together. Use the packing nut to push the new packing down the stem. When finished, open the valve and then tighten the packing nut.
