When I'm talking on the phone I notice I gesture with my free hand. What is up with that? It's not like the person on the other line can see me. It's a habit, and it's worse especially when I'm exicted.

Many people do. Words are only one of the ways that humans naturally communicate to other people. When we're excited, we want to communicate better and thus, we use more methods of communication including body communication and hand motions. Whether or not the other person sees doesn't matter to the person doing the communication. It's a natural instinct. Although you aren't realizing it, I'll bet your facial structure and eyes change, your voice changes, and I'll bet if you're standing you start pacing more showing agitation and excitability.

Haha i thought i was the only one, my brothers always make fun of me for that lol. Dont worry, you´re definitely not alone on this one. And im kind of worse actually, cuz lol i not only gesture with my hands but if im like describing something to the person im talking to i tend to move my hands in such a way that i sort of describe the shape of the object im talking about, you know lol. And yeah im even more descriptive when im excited lol i dont understand why i do it either. :)

Most all people use their hands to some extent when they talk. Some more than others. Watch any TV program and really look. Go to any place where people are having a conversation and observe and you will see that it is basically a human trait that probably goes back to a primitive time.

I think a lot of people do that. It's just a natural habit. For those of us who talk with our hands in person, it's natural for us to do it over the phone too. Don't beat yourself up over it; there are certainly worse habits you could have.

yeah I totally do that! My husband makes fun of me all the time. I need to tie my hands down. Its realy bad when I'm giving directions and I point like they can see it. Or I nod my head instead of saying anything and they don't know my response. It happens. I'm aweful!

They can't see it but it effects your speaking rhythm. I used to make faces when I would talk on the phone and people would know that I was insincere.

everyone does that. if you didn't move while you were talking you'd look really weird - like a zombie or something. even guys do it. i usually wrap my finger in the chord and then look really weird as i gesture. haha
