I am a HUGE environmentalist, and am a big recycler. If I throw them in the garbage, will they decompose? Or what should I do with them?

Here's what we do with ours: First we wash them in a bleach load. Then:

Use them to paint (great for rag rolling, ragging on color, ragging off paint and blending)
Use them for dirty jobs like changing oil & cleaning the dipstick
Use them to clean silver (great because they don't scratch the delicate surface, t-shirts and white socks are particularly good for this job)
Use them to clean the tracks of windows when you wash them (scruch up real well to absorb the window cleaner that inevitably ends up in there)
Use them to flip glass table tops when you clean the bottom side (don't leave finger prints)
Use them to dust (especially between the spindles on a stairway, statuary, in tight places)
Great for cleaning and polishing stones (I use them when resealing my granite, polishing my marble and as poultices for stains on both as they don't scratch the surfaces)
Use them to remove the grease catcher on the back of the BBQ gril (simply wrap those undies around that disgusting overflow cup, dump it in the garbage and then use the undies to clean it out)
Use them cut up in little patches to put over the holes in planter containers to keep the dirt from flowing out when watering
Use old t-shirts as strainers out in the garden, as boquet garni for herbs tied with a string in stews and soups, as holders for bath teas or oatmeal when taking a bath
White socks when used as gloves are great for applying: cleaners to chrome and polishing, cleaning car dashboards with armourall, dusting lightbulbs, applying lemon oil or polishes to carved wood furniture, cleaning knobs on the stove, washing machine and dryer, lysoling door handles, cleaning items like candle holders that have intricate bases, cleaning out the bagless container on vacuum cleaners

NO , Keep them they are good for using as rag´s , like for cleaning the silver,or for cleaning the car, or for the kid´s bike´s ,when they come home with them wet . We all need the odd rag at sometime or another, Then when they are really of no use , burn them

Seriously, sell them on eBay. Make up some wild story about what happened with each pair. You'll make a mint and have found a great way to dispose of them.
