I don't know what is wrong with me. Since I was 17 I haven't had a regular period and now I'm almost 23. There are times I don't get one for months or even a year at a time. At that time, I also gained about 30lbs. and since then have been up and down in the weight department. I have tried to exercise but I'm sometimes I'm soooo lethargic that I can't even get out of bed to even walk around the house. I went to my doctor for a routine physical and she says that it's all in my head. In other words, it's mind over matter. I have a feeling that I have a sluggish thyroid, but when I had my thyroid tested she said the results came out fine. I can't get a full thyroid test at my doctor's office. In order to get one, I need her approval to go to another place but she won't give me one because again it's all in my head.
I started taking vitamins and stopped drinking soda even to see if this would help. I also limited the amount of refined sugar and pasta in my diet but still no avail. Help?

Let me also add that when I do get my period, I get sick and the pain is almost unbearable. I had a pelvic exam and those came out ok. I also get cold easily. I was taking an anti-depressant but that made my symptoms worse, so I'm in the process of finding something new to try from a new doctor because this other doctor wasn't quite sure what to do for me. I'm currently on a low dose birth control pill, but I'm still not getting my period. My doctor wants me to "tell my mind to get my period" because she says I have a mental block against it. She just basically said I was a "big ol' mess" and I'm not kidding when I say that:/

It's probably your birth control pill.
But I feel the need to comment on your doctor's behaviour.. i personally think s/he was out of order, unless s/he said the comments in a jokey kind of way.

How long ago have you started the pill? It could take a few pill packs to get your period to come on time.

I would see another doctor as well. She is not helping you by saying its all in your head and you have a mental block. Seek a second opinion.

Try looking up Poly-cystic ovary syndrome. It causes irregular periods, and very painful ones at that. It normally accompanies people who are overweight (not saying that you are- but just thought I'd mention it since you mentioned gaining and losing weight). I don't know what else to tell you. But it may be worth looking up. Good luck, i hope this helps!
