Being the conservative I am, I will say liberal envy.

Let me explain. the profit motive works for society because it REWARDS initiative, risk-taking, hard work, etc. That helps all of us in the long run.

Redistribution of wealth HURTS society because it breaks this correlation between effort and reward. So people don't have as much incentive to succeed, and some would argue that in fact it gives people incentive to fail, or not to try as hard.

I'd like to think our system combines the best of both - incentives for effort and a safety net for those who really need it.

PS There sure as heck IS envy! Look at all the questions about the rich, greedy conservatives! Why do the same people who decry materialism care so much about OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY?
