When sunlight passes through rainfall, the droplets act as a prism, breaking up the white light into it's respective colors.
If your friend is that stupid, he needs more than one sentence to understand how light works. Try explaining the color spectrum and how white light is actually a combination of all colors, and the rainfall merely breaks it up. The 'bow' effect is a little more complicated, but basically it has to do with the angle the sunlight is coming in at and how it is refracted off the water. Reading a basic physics or meterology book can explain these things further.

Why in One Sentence? - for a Dumb guy.
If your friend is Smart he won't need help to understand.
If he is dumb he will never understand.
For your Information Rainbow can be seen only in the Mornings OR Evenings. Never at Noon. From one side the Sun Rays act as Light Source and the Horizon becomes the "Canvas" trapping the Bow. It is an Illusion but can be Photographed.

Condensation in the air causes sunlight to pass through the water vapor, which acts as a prism and breaks the light up into its 7 colored components, or the light spectrum.

When light hits rain drops, it is spread into the rainbow spectrum of colors and although we see only one color from one drop, since there are many drops, we see all the colors in the sky.
