By trend I mean a behavior that is becoming more widespread or less widespread. By contemporary i mean the trend in continuing now even if it started some time ago.

The most obvious one is the deterioration of good grammar, spelling and punctuation since the spread of IM (instant messaging). Because it is done on cell phones quite a bit, many rather obscure abbreviations have sprung up to avoid having to punch out long messages where it takes three clicks to get to a letter, and the keyboard is so small that many people hold the phone with both hands and just use their thumbs to input. Capitalization and punctuation are just about out of the question.

The problem is, they then use this same careless style when they write questions here, for example, simply out of habit. Next thing you know, these young people will be attempting to enter college without the basic skills of writing they need. I shudder to think what business letters will look like in a few years!
