or is it just another item invented simply because its small enough to fit in the cage?

Hamsters have a natural territory of several square miles! Putting such an active animal in a small cage is a problem. The wheel isn't the best solution, but it is a way for them to exercise and move, without it the cage would be too small and too boring for a hamster to live happy.

I really think all rodents do appreciate wheels. I know all the ones I've ever had - 6 mice, 2 hamsters have always spent vast amounts of time in it!

The fact of the matter is, they have a lot of energy. You either need a 20m squared secure run for them (how many times have you seen that) or a wheel for them to work off all that energy.

I used to let two of my mice have the free run of my room at uni, as there were no gaps for them to disappear into. I think they must've been the happiest mice ever, but if I put the wheel in the middle of the floor for them, they would still hop on to it occasionally! Proof positive as far as I'm concerned!

Mine certainly does'nt. His wheel has been sitting in his cage un -used for a year now. The only action the wheel gets is when Harry sits on it to have a wash!!!

I guess like all animals, hamsters are unique and have different likes and dislikes. He still loves coming out and going for a run in his exercise ball and playing with me and my husband. But as far as the wheel goes? forget it!!

Mine doesn't like the wheel.

Thanks to a 9-volt battery, a transformer and a few capacitors, though, I've made a dandy little hamster prod. A pre-run pasta dinner and two batteries will get him through the equivalent of the Boston Marathon.

They love it!My old hamster ran on his wheel on the time.He even had food stuffed in his cheeks while running once. After he died of old age, months later I got a new one and she ran all the time too. It's a rodent thing.
