You have to believe you deserve it.
Good attitude.
Remember that even when you fall on your face, you're still moving forward.
Don't wait for someone to notice you. Make yourself know and let those who can help you know what you want.
Be gracious and kind. Sometimes the good will of "little people" can strongly influence decision makers.
Have a clear goal in mind and a practical plan. But don't be rigid.
Don't let yourself be sidetracked out of it.
Good luck!

I hate to say this, but, knowing the right people makes all the difference. If you know the right people, hard work and luck don't even come in to play. Sad but true.
