It is recommended that you water in the morning. Plants will purposely evaporate moisture from their leaves in an attempt to control rising internal leaf temperatures. This transpiration process can only happen if sufficient water exists at the plant's roots. Watering in the morning insures that there will be sufficient moisture in the root zone during the heat of the day to support transpiration.

Watering in the hot mid-day sun is not efficient due to rapid evaporation.

Never, ever water late in the day or at night. Plants that have wet leaves through the night set up ideal conditions for fungal attacks. Also, damp soil at night increases the humidity around a plant and promotes diseases like powdery mildew. Powdery mild is a disease that likes damp, not wet conditions.

Water your plants early in the morning (way before the strongest heat of the day) or in the evening. This will encourage the water to be absorbed by the plant's roots rather than evaporate due to the heat.

Early morning - late evening. Always water at the roots only if watering in the morning (don't pour water over leaves of plant or the sun could "fry" them). Save the over the plant watering for the evening watering!!!

My grandparents always say that the best time to water plants is either first thing in the morning (before 8 am) or in the late evening (after 9 pm).

Do your watering in the early morning or late afternoon / early evening. You'll lose less moisture to evaporation so more will actually reach the plants' roots. It's best to water the roots and not the foliage. If you use a sprinkler and the foliage gets wet, do your watering early enough so the foliage has a chance to dry before nightfall. Wet foliage can encourage disease.

I say in early morning, so water won't evaporates too quickly by the sun. In the hot, hot day, I would water in early morning and in the evening, too. The plants will appreciate you!

I water my plants in the morning but sometimes by the evening they need watering again-it basically depends on how hot it is and flowering plants need more water!
