There are many things essential to being a great point guard. The most important thing is dribble penetration with the ability to pass without turning the ball over. Look no further than Steve Nash when it comes to that. If you beat your man from up top and are able to drive, it makes for much higher percentages. Here are a few examples.

Tony Parker may not have the Assists of Nash, but he consistently beats his man and because he's an above average passer, the defense is thinking pass first. This opens up all of his scoring. This is why he shoots around 50% every yr from the PG position, and at only 6'2.

The same goes with Steve Nash. When he beats his man off of the dribble and drives the lane, a defender has to think that he's going to pass first. Therefore, their weight/lean is directed at the man they're guarding. And this is why Steve Nash is able to shoot around 50% as well. Steve Nash isn't the quickest guy in the world, but uses great fundamentals (footword) and rarely picks up his dribble.

If these guys were strictly shooters posing no threat as distributors, they would never shoot anywhere near 50%, and probably wouldn't even be in the NBA. Because they penetrate the lane and are good passers, it opens up their entire offensive game.

Dribble penetration.
When you can beat defenders off the dribble, it breaks the defense so you can pass the ball to an open teammate.

This is harder than it seems, even coming off of a pick, because dribbling the ball slows you down.

You need to be able to drive left or right to keep a defender off balance. Just driving right all the time becomes predictable.
Of course, you will need very good ball handling skills in order to do this, which is why it's the hardest position to fill.
