I work for a company that begins with W and ends with alMart and I applied for another position within the company. I was told that I would have to take a cut in pay to take the new psotion. A friend who worked for this company said that when she took another position, they took away her pay raise and she was actually making less money. Is this legal, and more specifically, is this legal in Maryland?

I think that this is totally rediculous! I worked for them also, I NO LONGER work for them due to the way they treat their employees! I do not see how they can pay you something then turn around and tell you that you can have another position, but cut your pay in the process. I hate this company, they have ruined their rep with me. I do not know if it is legal or not, but I would call the wage and labor board in your state to find out. The number is below.

Under certain circumstances, Maryland law imposes criminal penalties for an employer who deliberately fails to pay the wage of an employee without a valid reason, or provides employment with the intent not to pay.
If your claim involves non payment of the minimum wage or overtime pay, you should contact the U.S. Department of Labor at 410-962-4984 or Wage and Hour Division.

Oh yes, any company can pay you anything it wants to pay you. This is called "at-will employment." W****mart isn't the only offender by far. Basically, we have done this to ourselves by swallowing the conservative claptrap that unionization is bad for the economy. What collective bargaining really does is insure a living wage for all workers as well as put teeth into the agreement if an employer violates it.

Yes, it's perfectly legal, as you are accepting the position, therefore, accepting the paycut. People do this all the time. Sorry Charlie.

Yes it is legal. If it is a different position the pay scale can be different.

I think it is...my understanding of the labor laws is that you are paid by the position's wage, not by what you are currently making, unless you have a contract agreement that says so...
