as a former worker in a hospital, let me tell you they do it and I have now idea why, it is a weird, perverse sexual fetish...and Richard Gere originated it. It is cruelty to animals and people who come into the ER because of this should be sent to jail, what if King Kong or realistically and elephant came by and decided to grab you and toss you up their butt, wouldn't be pretty would it? ps this is not an SF thing it is not a gay thing some guys were married and there wives helped put the furry critters up there.

Actually it's not a myth. When I was in California back in the early eighties, the news reported a large number of gay men showing up in the emergency room with the hamsters still stuck up their butts.
