I can see why this would seem unfair to an average person and it is. What is good for one should be good enough for all. On the other hand history has shown that when politicians and civil servants are poorly paid they resort to expecting bribes from citizens for services that are supposed to be available to anyone. It would be far better to expect your government to provide basic services to all or society since this works.

Taxation without representation is unfair. The middle class shoulders the burden of taxes and pays the highest percentage of its income in taxes. The USA needs a flat tax to make the taxation fair. (A tax flat tax could also allow funding for a National Health Care System.)
Money alone doesn't win an election. Politicians need the middle class vote to get elected. The middle class must use the power it has by uniting in vote and ending unfair taxation by supporting a flat tax for all its citizens.

No, it is not what we want.
Police officers want raises, as do teachers, firemen, health care workers.
But these very people are the ones that voted for (or did not) their Congressman,Representatives, and Senators.
Until we have an educated voting nucleus, instead of voting the Party, because that is the way my parents did, and my Grandparents.
What is even worse is not voting at all, then (bit ch) and belly-aching about the way things are. Good question.

I like the idea of the Elected officials should have to pay for their own health care, and less perks. Problem is that they would have to vote to do it, and they won't

They must maintain a home and office in their home district as well as Washington area. In order to get information they need and to travel to their home district it is necessary for them to fly. Do you think someone making $50K a year could do that? Yes they have better healthcare and some are trying to get what they have for the rest of us. Very few if any countries have poor people running them.
Even George Washington was one of the wealthiest men in America at the time he became President. That's even after spending much of his own money to pay the continental army.

I think elected officials need to remember that they are servants of the people and not the other way around. Most of them have forgotten that, and so they have developed a misguided sense of entitlement. But they are not entitled to more than the common people are. *sm*

Because we have accepted the premise of a competitive social model, thinking that our business is to blindly replicate what we think we see in the so called natural world. This reply somewhat escapes the immediatre scope of your question, but pls. think about it

WE DON'T think that at all!!
WE are powerless to end their perk grabbing, raise voting, benefit burglarizing in the name of government!
WE should be in charge of all that!

I agree. they get a lot of perks.
and while they are rich and secure they think they understand what less fortunate people go through
some do understand, those who come from non-wealthy families but normally to get into politics you need some connections
