All time favourite is too difficult. Top 5 (also very difficult, and in no particular order):
Lanark by Alasdair Gray -
Surreal dystopian allegory woven with an auto-biographical story - stunning wit, imagination and humanity.
Dead Letter House by Drew Campbell -
Touching and often hilarious meditations on God, family, sex and violence with a subtle plot twist that draws a tear when you're not expecting it.
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka -
A fellow wakes up one morning to discover he's turned into a giant beetle. Well... what would you do?
We're Going To Have To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver -
Dissection of a mass murdering teenager by his mother, as told in a series of letters to his father. Tragic and moving.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams -
If you only know this through the film, TV or radio it's really worth reading the books (five in the increasingly inaccurately named trilogy).
Hope you enjoy.

My all time favourite book is definitely one of the CHERUB books by Robert Muchamore - if you haven't read them i suggest you do - if you decide to read them this is the order that they go in the series...
1. The Recruit
2.Class A (American title - The Dealer)
3.Maximum Security
4. The Killing
5.Divine Madness
6.Man vs. Beast
7.The Fall
8.Mad Dogs (not out yet)
9.The Sleepwalker (not out yet)
There should be 12 altogether but some have not been written yet.
I give the CHERUB books 5/5 ***** (5 star) B|R|I|L|L|I|A|N|T

I like short stories that are inspirational and not negative..
i used to read a lot of stuff by Stephen King and others like him but got too depressed reading so much pain and suffering...i stop looking at the news too...
i suffer from depression and i don't need stuff to remind me of the great injustice there is in this world..so negative..so i try to look at the happier side of life...

Try 'A Fool's Alphabet' by Sebastian Faulks or my all time favourite is 'Skallagrig' by William Horwood (this is out of print now but you can get reasonably cheap copies on ebay).

For Pleasurable reading Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is my favorite. "Slaughterhouse Five" is a great novel to start off with. "Wampeters, Foma & Granfalloons" is an amazing collection of his short stories.
