Probably due to the position of the baby putting pressure on your lungs. Sleep however you feel comfortable, cause shortness of breath is common in the last weeks. Hang on, girl, it won't be long now.
Edit to add: Try sleeping in a recliner, if you have one. When I was pregnant with my twins, in the last few weeks, it was the only way I could sleep, in a half sitting position.

I am not sure about that, but until you talk to the doc or midwife I wouldn't lay that way! The last few weeks are very uncomfortable and it is difficult to think about anything but the main attraction soon to come, but try to walk get lost of rest and relax. Also try not to lay in a reclined position, I have heard that it can make the baby not get into a good position for birth!

I am 37 weeks this week, I sleep practically sitting up because of the breathing and heart burn. It is normal, plus the baby tends to curl up very high up, at least mine does. The left side is supposed to be the best side to lie on, better oxygen flow to the baby, if I lie on my side, I prop myself a bit higher and I find it is more comfortable, at least for awhile. At this point, I am uncomfortable in any position for too long. We are almost there, I don't think I have slept too much in weeks. I wish you luck, try and hang in there.

It's just the position of your baby. You've got either legs or head right up in your lungs. My baby was breech, his head in my lungs and his back to the left side. When I laid on my right he'd shift and it would be hard to breathe. Don't worry, you're almost done!
