What did the British do to keep the colonists from expanding westward?

mostly the wilderness did this...as it was so wild that the early settlers had enough problems surviving in the east until they tamed the Indians and learned how to live off the land..the first settlers starved to death..and the following ones were depended on the local Indians to help feed them...yes, then the white settlers paid the Indians kindness back with taking their land and stabbing them in the back..how lucky for the Europeans..how sad for the Indians

There were actually laws to prevent them, and soldiers and Native American tribes as well. But, in the long and short of it all, they could do little.
