You're correct, the guy in the shop was not a professional. Having your rabbit eat hamster food could pose a threat to it's health. Hamster food is made up of the balance of nutrients that are intended for hamster, not rabbits. The best thing to give your rabbit is rabbit food (timothy hay based pellets with no additives or seeds works great).

Another problem is that most hamster food contains nuts and seeds, which can be difficult for your rabbit to digest and may cause him or her to choke while eating them.

Stick with rabbit food and don't listen to what pet stores try to tell you. They're only out to make a quick buck.

Bloody pet shop people! A nibble of hamster food from time to time shouldn't hurt BUT

Rabbit food is for rabbits.
Hamster food is for hamsters.

They are very different animals, with very different dietary requirements - trying to maintain a rabbit on hamster food can only lead to ill health.

Rabbits need 75% hay in their diet, and proper rabbit pellets. Rabbit mix CAN be OK - but only if they eat all parts of it, which they rarely do, meaning they miss out on essential nutrients. Better to go with pellets.

Perhaps you should let the petshop guy know this so he doesn't get other people feeding their rabbits hamster food!

No it's not okay. Rabbits and hamsters have different dietary needs and should be fed food specifically for their species.
A rabbit needs a mixture of vegetables, hay and pellets to remain healthy. Hay, such as Timothy hay or alfalfa should be available to your bunny at all times. Vegetables: carrots, carrot tops, parsley and broccoli are bunny favs and should be fed 2-4 cups per day....try keep away from "watery" vegetables like lettuce, celery, cabbage, etc.
Pellets: must be specifically made for rabbits, feed your bunny 1/4 - 1/2 cup a day.

I think it would be okay but not as his primary food source, if he likes it. My bunny eats, life cereal, chocolate, lettuce, carrots, hay and rabbit pellets. Usually pet shops have pamplets or books that a complementary or you can check out a book at the library all about rabbits.

i could say hamster or guinea pig for you. I easily have had mice, and that they are elementary to shelter(as long as they don't get too jumpy once you attempt and clean their cage..), yet you do no longer choose one, it incredibly is truthfully advantageous. Hamsters could be inexpensive and that they do no longer choose many costly vet journeys. (perchance none in any respect) and in case you have been to get a hamster, in case you opt for a small lively one, get a Roborovski Dwarf. in case you opt for a extra physically powerful one that is far less probably to chew, yet does not flow around lots, get a Syrian hamster. (Teddy undergo, Black undergo, etc.) and guinea pigs smell if no longer cared for suitable, I had some and the 2nd lived fortunately. I had to offer him away yet in any case. Rabbits are costly, and that i've got considered cages at some shops for rabbits fee as much as $a hundred and fifty. And hedgehogs can harm, a instructor of mine had one and he or she have been given pricked through a quill of his.. It drew blood. Plus, they are able to be too choosy each and every each and every now and then... and that i've got had adventure with guinea pigs and mice, yet i've got achieved analyze on hamsters. Why, i do no longer think of you are able to care, yet in any case. And hamsters can stay fortunately in inexpensive bin cages. I alert you presently. DO. no longer. GET. A. CRITTERTRAIL. X. CAGE. it incredibly is in simple terms too SMALL. in case you get hamsters, don't get the Crittertrail X. they are able to be satisfied in case you loook into getting a tumbler aquarium with a cord mesh precise or make a bin cage. in my view, hamsters or guinea pigs are a thank you to flow. :]

no, this is incorrect. Rabbits need plain pellets along with timothy hay as their 'bread and butter', the mainstay of their diet. Don't waste your money on gourment blends with lot of grains and bits and peices of junk in them, either.

Just plain rabbit food pellets and timothy hay, along with greens every day.
