Laxatives are not safe during pregnancy, and aren't really that safe at all.
Stool softeners are always safe. Glycerin suppositories are safest as almost none is absorbed into the blood stream.

My midwife gave me material stating all the things I could take for things like headaches and such. It said under no circumstances to take a laxative. It suggested fiber like metamucil or prunes.

In the Uk lactulose is prescribed for pregnant women, i think it is available over the counter but obviously check with midwife before taking it. I know it's safe as it was prescribed for me when I was pregnant.

My midwife told me metamucil or flaxseed 1-2 tsp, 1 time per day. Those are both safe for pregnancy.

Drugs and laxatives aren't the best choice. Much better to change your diet by eating more high-fiber food and drinking more water!
Drink a lot more water and eat more green beans, legumes (kidney beans, chick peas, black beans, pinto beans, baked beans), apples (with skin), banannas, citrus fruit, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, berries, baked potatoes with the skin, zucchini, cooked onions, etc.
Also eat more whole grains (100 percent whole grain bread, whole grain cereal, whole grain english muffins, Post Raisin Bran topped with fruit and soy milk, brown rice, brown whole grain pasta).

Please see your midwife / doctor, what is OK for someone else may not be ok for you.
Generally speaking a good balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg and cereals will do the trick. Just be careful and do not take anything without checking.
