Aluminum foil.
Clear out any existing debris left by your nesting companions.
Roll several pieces of aluminum foil into balls and place in your hanging basket.
The aluminum foil trick kept the sparrows out of my ferns last year.
Moth balls also might help. Just put a few moth balls into your hanging basket and see if the birds still want to hang out in your plants.
I put moth balls in my flower beds to keep small animals like squirrels and rabbits from nibbling and digging up my plants.
Animals don't like the smell of moth balls ( I don't care for it much either), birds might not either.

And just what is wrong with that? I would feel good about the birds trusting my front porch for their nests. For them to feel that safe would be a honor on my gardening skills. Relax get a pair of binoculalrs and enjoy the cycle of life. This would be a great lesson for the children to be able to observe. Just do not let them get to close to the nests.

I've been told painting your ceiling sky blue helps, because the birds are looking for a safe place for their babies where other animals can't get to them. They think it's the sky. You could also try going out and removing their nests everyday before they lay eggs. Sooner or later they ought to get the idea.

The best thing to do is try to keep the birds away from that area. You can try wind chimes and also find an owl (something shiny and light) so the wind will gently keep it moving a bit. Good luck.

you could try putting toothpicks sticking up in the pots, the mother birds may find them too uncomfortable to land in . Perhaps you could put up some bird houses as you seem to be in an area that birds like to nest.

hang wind chimes, windsocks near the hanging plants
they dont like sudden movement
I understand your plight- many many bird poops and baby birds falling out onto porch dying is a rather disgusting sight

You could use an inexpensive windmill type of toy, the movement usually scares them away. And a fine mesh screen might help, these are almost invisible.
