First, you will want to turn the mower off and disconnect the spark plugs on the mower engine. You don't want to accidentally have the engine start by any means.

Next, there should normally always be a belt tensioner of some sort. Normally they are either spring loaded or kept tight by some adjustment screw. You'll need to release some of the tension on the belt. Once you do that, then work the belt so that part of the belt is worked over the edge of the pulley. Slowly turn the pulley and as you turn the pulley the belt will work its way off. Reverse the method for putting the new belt on. Look at the belt number inside the old belt to see what size and type of belt you need. Your new belt should be slightly shorter than your old belt since the old belt should have stretched some. You may need to adjust the tension settings to be a little looser to get the new belt on then tighten them back up some once you get the new belt on since the new belt will be slightly shorter. If the belt slips on the lawnmower then your tension is too loose and you need to tighten it back up. For some lawn mowers you have to unlatch certain portions of the deck and move the deck slightly forward to take off the belt.
