I am totally 100% with you there! Are they afraid of what someone has to say? Those who won't except email, to me, cut off any discussion towards a question they ask. They add details to their questions, often times, typing to one or another individual who answered their question, and that person can merely type in a reply to the added details of the questioner. It irritates me to no end, because they get to "cut-down" a person, who answers, but the answerer, cannot defend, or come back, even though, they have typed into the question their added details.
The IM is a different story, to me. I see no reason to talk live about an issue, as there is no expediency to any answer or question.
However, I do think that those who won't except either, are either cowardly, or don't know their facts to base either question, or answer upon. Oh well, though. They have the right to do it, and not face their opposition, or even those who would agree with them, and just want to let them know they got a thumbs-up!

I don't do IM because I don't trust computers. I do allow e-mails b/c if anyone has anything to say to me good or bad, I will lend my ears and consider it. That's what I do everyday in real life, the Internet is a medium through which cold impersonal messages can be transmitted for the sake of the willful and those folks that would rather speak from a distance than have a human conversation. Some do it out of cowardice, others have just grown accustomed to being passive and entirely impersonal on a day-to-day basis, sign of the times I guess but their motives are irrelevant. I play the personal therapist for about 14 different people on any given day in real life, the Internet is where I have an opportunity to be opinionated and there's a lot of slack cut for me if I happen to be wrong; but if I am wrong about something and someone wants to address me on the matter at hand, they are always welcome to do so.
Some other reasons that one might not allow e-mails is perhaps they do not want their in-box being filled with this random crap from people on Yahoo! Answers, it's bad enough that Yahoo! needs to send you an e-mail about the progress (or lack thereof) of your questions or answers. If you wanted to know, you'd figure it out for yourself. I feel that way about it, some others might agree.

To avoid harassment..
I used to allow ims however I also was harassed quite a lot, in the neighborhood of 30-40 messages per day.
I have never had a single TOS violation and therefore would like to think I am a fair user of YA!. However my opinion is not always popular, and that is fine. It is my opinion and just as I respect you, you can respect mine. Being of differing mindsets occasionally opens the doors for harassment.
Out of several hundred IMS I did receive while It was allowed I perhaps only had a dozen that were to say thank you, that was a nice idea. Or to incite further discussion in a polite and civil way.

I accept Emails 'cause, well, I might need to talk to someone.
I don't accept IM because I really only want to talk to the one person on my list on IM, not whoever randomly decides to message me for some stupid reason. Otherwise I end up with an enormous block list and that's annoying.

I agree with you 100%. I often think the same thing. I do allow emails but not IM's. The Im's could be really bothersome while I am at work, which is where I usually participate in Yahoo Answers. If you notice, mostly the people who are abusive on here are the ones who cannot be contacted.

I accept emails but I don't use yahoo im. However, I got an email the other day from some punk just spluring expletives for no reason. I didn't appreciate that.
If this site was secure and free of future jail birds then more people probably would accept them.

I didn't even realize that my email was turned off until someone pointed it out to me. It's on now, but I can't guarantee that I'll have enough time to read the emails. I don't understand why people don't think that using the public forum is enough, but ok. I turned it on.

When I ask a question anyone, including the asker, can comment on my answer publicly. What do you want to tell me privatly that you can't say in public? I've had some emails from idiots (I'm not referring to you) and frankly I don't want to be bothered with that.

I allow e-mail, I don't allow IMs. I don't want to be chatted up while I'm on the computer. E-mails I can answer at my leisure.
