As a subject matter, no, I don't think there is a difference. If anything, majoring in European Studies could indicate an interest in other cultures which could be useful in the long run, and I would assume you need a language other than English for European Studies, which should serve you well in life. However, I can't speak to the quality of the two programs at your particular institution, and if your school offers a stellar American Studies program, but only a mediocre European Studies program, then I would definitely pick the better of the two.

If you're studying abroad, why are you even thinking about majoring in your own culture? Or am I reading your question and category too literally?
If I had had the opportunity to study in Europe, you can bet I would have taken every class on European history, art, culture and literature I could have gotten into.
I don't think one area is better necessarily than the other...and American culture is European oriented and based since the marjority of our immigrants were western Europeans over the years.
