Have some programs that are memory hogs and I currently have 512 MB. I only have two slots and memory capacity at 1MG. I also have a Dell 4600 with 4 slots and two 256 currently installed. Could I take the two from the first and add it to the 4600 (making it 1 G) and buy a gig for the 4500?

Also is memory all the same? What would be a good source to buy memory (best value) I see such a variance in pricing and am not sure what to buy.

Thanks!

All memory is not the same, but those 2 computers probably take the same types, so you could do what you are attempting.

I suggest going to crucial and using their scanner tool to verify this information, and to get recommendations on your new memory.

Good luck.

Memory is not all the same. It comes in different styles (DDR or SD for example) and different speeds. If you look at a memory chip, it will have a notch somewhere in the bottom of the chip. That notch is positioned to only allow the memory to fit in a PC that is compatible with it. You would be physically unable to put the memory into a board that can not use it.

However, the "style" (slot) can be the same, bu the speed be different. If you put two different speeds of memory into a computer, it will run at the lower speed.

You can try moving the memory and see if it will boot in the 4600. If it does, then order new memory for the 4500. Check the Dell website for the part number for the 1 gig (actually 2 - 512) chips for the 4500. Then "google" that part number and you will probably find compatible memory for a fraction of the price.

Check the speed on the current memory that you have, get same speed and DDR that will do the trick.

www.tigerdirect.com have good prices or go to www.pricewatch.com to find competitive prices.

Not all memory is the same, however, those two systems have interchangeable modules. (PC 3200 DDR400) You can buy more at Crucial or NewEgg.
