Most universities how admit that a four year degree will now take five years. This is due to added classes that are now required for a major. Students wanting to ensure that they have a marketable job are now taking double majors or majors with two minors.
I know that i am currently in at the end of my fourth year. I will take classes this summer and the next year to graduate in june 2008, along with most of my friends who started college at the same time I started.
CNN
“only 37 percent of first-time freshmen entering four-year bachelor's-degree programs actually complete their degrees within four years. Another 26 percent take either five or six years. And the remaining 37 percent either don't get their degrees at all or complete their coursework in more than six years. “
“The current trend in graduation rates leans toward students taking longer to graduate despite the fact that more of them are bringing along credit from high school. “
“Only one in three State University of New York students graduates from four-year colleges within four years, reflecting a costly, extended stay that some deficit-ridden states nationwide are trying to cut short. “

I'm not. I'll be graduating a semester behind.
I think a lot of people are in our situations. What I hate about it is that a lot older adults/parents don't understand this and assume that you "messed up" somewhere along the way.
College is completely different from the way it was years ago, I wish society would realize that.
Every year my school seems to add more and more classes to my major requirements and my general education requirements. No matter how much you plan ahead as a freshman, your plan doesn't always work out. My university is so large that classes fill up on the first day of registration. Sometimes, that can throw off your whole plan of study.

I guess if you think "on time" is 4 years then I would say no. I have heard that the average now for people to finish college is 5 years. I think the average student today has so many other responsibilities, like work ectera. If you dont work or have any other responsibilities besides school then you should be able to finish in 4 years but only if you go during summer and stick with your original major.

When I visited an Ivy league college one of the selling points was this: 80+ % of their kids graduate in four years. As several people pointed out here, this is quite unusual. Only a third or so of all college students graduate in four years. The Ivy guys pointed out that even though they cost $40k a year, that is not expensive compared to a school that costs $25 K a year, but you have to stay 5 or 6 years and cant start your full time job until you graduate. 4 years times $40k is $160 K, but the 5th year you get a job and make $40K. So at the end of 6 years you have spent $160k and made $80k. Net amount spent = $80k. If you go to state U for $25k for six years, total amount = $150K, no significant earnings, so you actually cost much more!!!
Since about half of American students start in Community colleges, and more than half switch majors, it is routine to take more than 4 years.

I graduated with my BS in 4 years by planning out my classes my freshman year to ensure I took enough classes each semester. With my MBA I was working full time and had a life outside of school and I still graduated in 2 years. It is possible it just takes some planning and will to complete school in the time you want to allow to complete school.
