Hi, I need to write a simple Mythology Myth on a Natural Reoccurrence,

for example; a goddess mourns over her son for 5 months, and lets nothing grow, those are now our harvesting seasons.

any ideas? I need a plot and Natural reoccurrence
( Also the names and people dont have to be actual greek God's and Godesses, i am just having hard time with the reoccurrence!)

thanks!

That example actually happened. It was the Greek goddess of harvest Demeter whose daughter Persephone was taken by Hades to the underworld.

Demeter looked for her and neglected the harvest. While there, Persephone ate some pomegranate seeds and was bound the the underworld for one-third of the year and this is the time that Demeter doesn't plant.

Myth in general use is often interchangeable with legend or allegory, but some scholars strictly distinguish the terms. The term has been used in English since the 19th century. The newest edition of the OED distinguishes the meanings

1a. "A traditional story, typically involving supernatural beings or forces, which embodies and provides an explanation, aetiology, or justification for something such as the early history of a society, a religious belief or ritual, or a natural phenomenon", citing the Westminster Review of 1830 as the first English attestation[3]
1b. "As a mass noun: such stories collectively or as a genre." (1840)
2a. "A widespread but untrue or erroneous story or belief" (1849)
2b. "A person or thing held in awe or generally referred to with near reverential admiration on the basis of popularly repeated stories (whether real or fictitious)." (1853)
2c. "A popular conception of a person or thing which exaggerates or idealizes the truth." (1928)

One natural reoccurence comes to mind...Cicadas. Yep, bugs! This particular bug has a reputation for only showing up every 13-17 years...most notably 17 years. This natural phenonema could be combined with the average age of child-bearing during the time in question. It could represent a positive element (these bugs are meaty and are digestible..according to the sources)...or it could represent a negative element (they are loud and large).

See the sources below for indepth information...good luck with your work...I suppose the Aurora Borealis would be another reoccuring phenonema...it may be too far north to be suitable in the storyline.

Most of the North American species are in the genus Tibicen—the annual or dog-day cicadas (named after the "Dog Days" because they emerge in late July and August). The best-known North-American genus is Magicicada, however. These periodical cicadas have an extremely long life cycle of 13 or 17 years and emerge in large numbers. Another American species is the Apache Cicada (Diceroprocta apache).

I suggest taking a look at the story of Persephone, a greek myth if I'm not mistaken. It has something to do with that you mean, regarding the seasons!

Naturally recurring events that might help you:

The ocean's tides, rotation of heavenly bodies (e.g. constellations), life cycles (e.g. some animals live only a season--they are born, mate, and die in that time)

For example--an animal bit a goddess, and she cursed it to live its life in a season.
