I think it was because they rewarded his imagination, playing with him and keeping him company, while his wife was so stodgy and disapproving. He was not only lonely, he was depressed over the failure of the play that closed the night it opened in the first part of the story. So when these kids went along with his role-playing games and stimulated his imagination, he began to put together the story of Peter Pan, which meant he basically gave them the credit for the story.

Was a very cool book, and managed to neatly side-step the problems Barrie had with people assuming he was a pedophile. It was just barely mentioned once, dismissed as ridiculous, and that was the end.

In fact, many authors of the Victorian era who wrote for children (especially Lewis Carroll) were suspected of dark motives for their stories. But in those days, anyone who had such urges repressed them so completely they never really became aware of what the urge was about. It got translated into a wish to avoid growing up, which was what Peter Pan was all about, after all.
