If you have done it in a job then you can say 'yes, I used to do the (blah blah) alone and it took weeks to complete'.
If you have only done it at school you can talk about a project that you completed over a series of weeks.

First off, can you?
What they are asking is whether you need constant supervision to get your work done, and do you always need someone telling you what to do.
They want to see if you have ideas and ambition. That you finish an assignment on time and accurate. That you will seek new assignments and ideas, without being told what to do. That you use your imagination and creativity to solve problems, not just ask the boss what to do next.
So think about how these apply, and be prepared to give 3 brief examples of how you took the innitiative to finish something, solve a difficult problem and what you have done to see a project or and idea to completion, using your creativity and tenacity.
Best of luck to you!!!

Well when your an interview you should say YES to this question. Usually when an interviewer asks this they want to know if you independant or if someone needs to constantly be on your butt for you to do your work.

This is a variation on the "can you work with minimal supervision?" question. The answer is "yes" (if you think you can do so) as in, "Yes, I'm comfortable workignindependently and also in a team environment. I consider myself to be self-directed and as long as I understand what the parameters of the job are, I don't require a lot of supervision to complete my tasks accurately and on time."
Good luck.

As a manager you need to say yes once you are familiar with your duties
I want someone who I trust to be left alone, but not someone who is cocky thinking they can jump in and do anything. A red flag goes up when I see someone wants to work alone too, depending on the person of coarse

yes, I actually prefer working alone and feel I get more doen that way. Working with a group or team is fine and works for me as well, but I feel there should be a balance of the two.

I would answer, "If there is a plan in motion that is well understood, then I can work independantly for however long it takes to get the job done, and do it comfortably and with confidence."

my job requires me to work independantly almost exclusively. if they ask you this in an interview they are asking if you need someone standing over you all the time because if not you will just slack off, so answer it yes

I have for 23 years! Answer with an example. They want to know if you are a self starter, not a procrastinator.
