I agree with you. Restaurants certainly charge enough for a meal. They should pay their help adequately and stop relying on a system of expecting diners to shell out even more.

as a server,I have a lot of customers who think that we make at least the minimum wage. However, in most states tipped service is not at the recognized minimum. At most we only get around 3-4 dollars an hour. So we depend on tips to pay the bills. We always try to give the best service that we can and be pleasant about it, even if we are not really in the mood. For excellent service I tip 20-30%. To bad service I always leave at least 10%. Everyone has bad days.

Beause they're providing you with a service. Just because they agree to do the job, it doesn't mean they want to. Plus, you're paying $100 for a meal; not $100 for your waiter. For them taking your order, bringing you the food, taking away the food, and being accomadating to you and your needs, they deserve some form of compensation.

And think of it this way; you *agree* to do your job, and you *agree* to perform to your bosses standards. Then why should you get paid?

It's called a job, and when you're a waiter/waitress, tips are part of that job.

Your waiter or waitress is not paid the normal minimum wage.Tips are expected to make up for the shortfall and
allow for the chance to earn more.If you get in the habit of tipping at 15%,you will be remembered, you will get better
service,you will be greatly appreciated.If you're spending
$100 as you stated,for dinner,chances are you're at a
finer restaurant. You deserve good service and when you
get it you should reward your server.I tip 20% as the norm. And don't stiff the server if the food is bad-speak to the manager.

I agree you shouldnt HAVE to tip a waiter because if you pay the meal you are paying them too so as long as they dont REALLY serve you .... then you dont have to tip them, its theyre job!

Well, sometimes the gratuity is already included in the total. So it depends, if the tip is already included then it's at your discretion if you'd like to leave your waiter/waitress more. If the gratuity isn't included, by all means leave a tip. It's courteous and the appropriate thing to do.

When a person takes a job as a server it is common knowledge/courtesy that a tip is expected for GOOD service.
I'm not saying that you should tip for crappy service.
But if you go out and enjoy a meal that you did not shop for, prep cook or clean-up after, you should certainly tip accordingly.

You should give them a tip. I tip them more if they go above and beyond also.
