The British royal family changed their last name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917. The reason? World War One broke out in 1914 and anit-German sentiment was at its height in 1917. In protest, King George V renounced all the German titles belonging to him and his family and adopted the name of his castle, Windsor.

all male of the line of Queen Elizabeth in the line of succession have as there surname Windsor but those of the female line have the surname Windsor-Mountbatten. the Princess Royal is the 1st member of the royal family to have been married under this surname . William and Harry would most like will never use a surname but it would be Windsor but i believe that in school then used the surname Wales for the Prince of wales

It is Windsor - the surname Mountbatten-Windsor will be borne by any descendants of Elizabeth and Philip who are not HRHs (unlike William and Harry) and do not have another name from their father (like Anne's children).Of course royals can call themselves what they like, which is why they can choose to use 'Wales'.
And will these xenophobes stop saying they are German? Their family has lived here for generations. How long do they have to be here before you accept them as English?

because of the fact the Queen as numerous persons have defined is in the "abode of Windsor" then actually they are Windsors. As human beings have already stated Charles, Andrew and Edward (and Anne probably till she married) have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor to reflect their Father's kin additionally. William and Harry, as nicely as Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise and James - all have their fathers' surname of Mountbatten-Windsor notwithstanding they are often customary via their fathers' titles i.e. Beatrice and Eugenie are Princesses of York and would desire to apply that as their surnames, and little lady Louise is of Wessex and her brother James is already Viscount Severn so he can use that. (Peter and Zara have been from delivery not HRH's as according to their discern's request and are only Peter and Zara Phillips, toddlers of Captain Mark Phillips.) William and Harry's father is the Prince of Wales so as that they are customary (fairly in the army) as William Wales and Harry Wales. whilst their father turns into King, William stands out as the Prince of Wales and could shop on being William Wales. Harry will probably only revert to being a Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor (whichever he and his father choose) till he's given a identify (perhaps whilst he gets married) to be Duke or Earl of someplace.

Their family name is Windsor or more accurately Mountbatten-Windsor. Their surname was changed in World War I from the German name (which I forgot) to the more English sounding Windsor. They are German, not English. The Mountbatten part comes from Prince Phillip, whose name was Mountbatten until he married the present queen.

Officially, it's Moutbatten-Windsor. However, I believe both have been using "Wales" (as in "Prince of Wales", their father's current title) as their last name in the military.
