I agree and disagree. Ponting is definitely a star player for the Australian side and can make some good runs at a crucial point but every batsmen has his own good qualities. Eg: 1)Dravid plays slowly and carefully making some grand strokes.
2)Gilchrist is a hard-hitter and he makes runs quickly so he's an important opener.
3) Fleming is equally important too.
4) The lower order of South Africa is amazing and can help to make runs too.
5)Brian Lara - First to reach a milestone....still playing really well.
So all in all in don't think anyone can be distinguished as the best player in the world coz remember everyone has that little talent hidden in them :-)

Presently he is the best batsman as he plays consistently well as compared to other greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

ofcourse he is.ppl say sachin is da best batsman,but how many times sachine helped indian cricket team win their matches?he is only good at making his own records.but 95% of ponting innings helped australia 2 win their matches.

Ponting is a great cricketer... But on current form you can't argue with the stats. Jacques Kallis (South Africa) is currently the world's best....

i admire him as a batsman;he's definitely one of the best, but i'm not much of a big fan .
