The sad truth of the matter is that a small state must be extremely nimble and always have a way around any dependency on trade with a superpower. The politics can be overwhelmed by foreign money if foreigners are allowed to create trade alliances with citizens.

A sudden unexpected boycot, fashion change, fad... whatever, from the public of the larger country could ruin the small states economy without even an intent.
