The *communication* was two years apart. They were both alive at the same time, and so could eventually meet. Time did not stop for her. All they needed to do was communicate and set a date to meet, which they eventually did.

Imagine it this way. In your mailbox, you get a letter from 2009 from some guy next door. Well, write back and say you'll come over in 2009. Then, in two years, go knock on his door. Ta da - you have now met him. So, because both of you are alive at the same time, inhabit the same Earth, etc., you could meet, though your messages were shifted two years in time.

How could they ever meet if they were in two different years. (04, and 06)?

They met in the year 2008, because it was not him who walked in front of that bus in 2006, because; she wrote him a note and he turned away at the last moment. They don't meet until Valentines day 2008. Why? Her note read and I quote "Stay away for two years." He could have met her that day at the restaurant in 2006 but she effectively told him not to.

How can you wait 2 years?

Actually he waited three years 2005 - 2008

did time stop for her?

Sort of. She made a wish on her magical dog, the same dog he had that things could be better when she visited the Lakehouse, the last place she was happy.

wouldn't they always be 2 years apart?

They were never two years apart, only their letters were. They were both alive, all along but they only met twice in six years.

Their communication was 2 years apart but when he went away from the Lakehouse the time was the same.

The point was that he had to be patient and wait the two years. Trying to see her in his time, before she was ready, got him killed.

The first time, when he went to her party, didn't count, because she did not yet know of him and he didn't tell her.

They could be at the same place, at the same time, but it was the letters that were two years apart. Remember, she was at the mailbox, and the flag went down, which was two years prior for him. But, two years later for him, he went there, and there she was.

They communicated between the two years but they also were both alive at the same time. Remember that she saw him get hit by the bus early in the movie? That's when she started to exchange the letters across time. They could never meet in her time because he had died in her time. After communicating across time, her present changed by saving him from being killed by the bus.

This movie was the most flawed "time travel" story i have ever seen in my life. If she made out with the guy at a party 3 months earlier, don't you think she would recognize him just a little bit at the end?!?!

They were always in the same time, but certain events needed to happen for them to be ready to meet each other. Remember when Keanu went to the party and met her? Well that was in his present tense. When they met at the party, she wasn't ready to meet him because Sandra's character was with the other guy. Or you could say that fate wasn't ready for them to meet.

Answer your question with a question...if I wrote this, and you didn't see it until 2 years from now, does that mean (assuming we're alive, etc) that it would be impossible for us to meet at that time?
(Not that I'm suggesting we do, you understand, it's to illustrate my point...)

this is totally fantasy and no way possible but it did make for a wonderful love story. My husband kept pointing out all the goofs and such but he still tells people how much he liked it.
