What signs do we look out for in the search for extra-terrestrial life?

right now, the only way we are looking is with project SETI which is looking for coherent periodic radio signals from space.

We are looking for intelligent or unusual patterns in received extra terrestrial radio signals. A good example is the 'Wow! signal' detected back in 1977 as part of the SETI project (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence). It turned out to be spurious but lead to the discovery of pulsars (a type of fast-rotating stars).

We will have to look for radio signals the are something,not from earth,but mean something to us.
Binary ones and zeros that would form a pattern,say the first 10 primary numbers.
It may not be much but it would prove that aliens do inhabit the universe with us.
No alien ever did or ever will visit earth.
I would look for any unusual activity on earth.
For instance;a fire hydrant that runs away when a dog tries to pee on it. Be suspicious of the fire hydrant.
A meat ball that flees in panic in the street as you approach.
Any other bizarre behavior could indicate the existence of an alien.
Use your imagination.
