Hi,
I've had all sorts of problems with my hard drive, i was advised to restore the system after an error message that said UNCOUNTABLE_BOOT VOLUME but this restore failed halfway through and now it says that there's no operating system! I've tried operating systems such as Ubuntu but this just shows up problems with the hard drive and file systems can't be created. What do i need to do, is it a question of reformatting? do i need to purchase something new, as you can probably tell my knowledge and this subject is somewhat limited. ANy answers would be greatly appreciated!

Microsoft includes a disk utility CHKDSK that detects and repairs any minor system corruption. To do this, use the following steps:

Enter Windows Recovery Console

At the command prompt, type: chkdsk /r

Hit Enter

When the repairing process completes, type: exit

Restart your computer

You can try repartitioning and reformatting the hard drive. That might resolve the issue. But if you are having problems even installing an OS, then it is probably a mechanical problem with the drive. Personally, I would not trust it. I would recommend purchasing a new hard drive and junking that one.

Take this hard disk to another pc and set it up as a secondary drive. Use Manage option to format the HDD to see if its still in working order.

If it can be reformat, bring it back to your existing system and start re-installing your OS e.g WinXP

you have numerous thoughts: - Use the abode windows format application that's put in on the XP installation disk. - purchase a high quality 0.33 occasion disk partition application - Acronis is great. whilst formatting utilising the Seagate application - you have gotten made between the partitions FAT32 which might make it incompatible with XP which makes use of NTFS.

You definitely need a new hard drive, yours is beyond using it any more.
