I am just trying to figure out why the flags are still at half staff, we had a solider buried last week, but it literally seems that on any given day, the flag is at half-staff. What gives? Is it because of the war?
Thanks!

The flag may be flown at half-staff by Presidential proclamation or by your state governor. It is also flown at 1/2 staff on specific days as listed in United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1.

SEE: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/faqs/q09.htm for the dates.

Flags should be lowered to half pole status when a soldier dies but you will find schools, businesses, fire departments, and police departments also doing the same thing with a fallen student, an important person in that business, a fireman, or a police officer doing the same things.

We had two police officers die in Charlotte on March 31st but there was not a fire station or a police department that did not lower their flag out of respect. (did that sentence make sense) Schools will lower their flags when a student does not die under normal circumstances.

It is possibly because of those lost in the war to date. Some do fly the flag half-staff simply because of that reason. It shows respect and honor to them, mourning for the survivors.

It depends on your community...they are not at half mast everywhere in the nation..there must be something that happened in your community.
