I believe it has something to do with testing your persistence.
It may be that they want you to call them, after 3-5 days to find out if you have got the job.
In my case, I understand what it is like not to be accepted for a job. As a matter of fact, I have never been asked back for an interview.

It goes back to an ancient tradition in Greece. The messenger who conveyed bad news was killed immediately after they gave the message. It's a deep-seated thing in the human psyche. If you got a call telling you that the job you had hoped to get and had spent weeks preparing for the interview - would you feel delighted about it. The employer isn't feeling so great either. I think it is best for both sides just to leave it alone. They didn't call you. That means, you didn't get the job. But why don't you call them ?

It's like a guy that takes your phone number at the bar and says "I'll call you" and never does.

It's simply a polite way to end the conversation and get you to leave. Some polite employers will send a letter, most just don't call. Take it the same you would from a date who never called you back. Move on.

You should intiate the call a few days after the interview, and remind them that you are interested in the job position.

It bothers me too. I just wait about a week and then assume that they will not be hiring me. Its the only way that I can deal with it. I guess I was better off without such a company.

I tell people we will call them when we make our decision. However, sometimes I just get too busy to call people back that we don't want to give the job to.

Your best bet is to call THEM back yourself. I have hired many people that I initially passed on because of their persistence.

I always have received a letter if the answer is negative and a call if it is positive. If you found this company via a head-hunter, definitly let the headhunters know.

I think the same applies to the dating world - ever have someone of the opposite sex say they will call yet never do? I really do believe it is the same concept.
