You asked two questions.(lol)
The best download program is firefox because you can begin downloading, interrupt the download if you need to, and then continue the download at a latter time. This is great on large downloads and if you are multitasking.
Now for adware, spyware etc. you can download Lavasoft's Ad-ware se and use it for free (personal addition). You should also be always running a virus software like McAfee or Norton Anti-Virus.

It doesn't matter what you download OR where you download it from. The ONLY way you can get spyware/virus from it is to open it WITHOUT scanning it! So when you download ANYTHING, DO NOT click on it and open it or you'll release anything it has to offer. FIRST, Right-Click the file and click on SCAN or SCAN FOR VIRUSES, then and only then, if it says there are no viruses, then you can click on it and open it. If it's a song or movie you've downloaded, then don't preview it and certainly don't just start playing it UNTIL you Rightclick and scan for viruses. Only YOU can allow a virus/spyware etc... to attack your computer. And only YOU can scan each file you download to keep yourself safe from harm. good luck :-)
People get viruses and stuff from say, Limewire and blame it on the program. In reality, it is because they've downloaded an infected file and then opened it without scanning it. So what do they expect? I've used Limewire and other same-type programs since 1995 and have not gotten one single virus because I scan my files as soon as I download them and keep myself and my computer safe. :-) Hope this info is helpful!
