so the other night, I was pulled over and the cop said he clocked me going 92 in a 65 zone.

the problem with that is, I have a radar detector that is pretty sensitive and goes crazy whenever i'm near a grocery store, let alone a cop radar. but this thing didn't go off at all when i passed the cop. also, when i passed the cop and i saw his headlights turn on, i looked down and saw 83mph.

my question is this: Do I try to fight this thing? Does saying "my radar detector didn't go off" count for anything in court? can this guy actually prove that he clocked me going 92? i live in philly pa and the ticket is 189 bucks and counts for 5 points on my license if i'm guilty.

lemme know your experiences with fighting tickets, radar guns and if they provide some sort of proof the cop can produce. i figure if they don't have some sort of radar reading, they can't prove me guilty.

1) Do not mention your radar detector.
2) Sell it on ebay,.
3) Buy a Valentine 1.

Edit-Virginia is the only state in the country where radar detectors are illegal. Connecticut used to ban them but even they came around in the early '90s.

Sticky ?....From my experience the tic is usually cheaper..However the DL point hurt alittle on ins. I recently got a 93 in a 55 OUCH!!..and my tic said following another vehicle..so since when did radar get veh #2 and not the first? MY Question? also ques you can ask for is the latest calibrations on the gun and the paperwork proving the officer had proper training on the radar..but if in your hometown not a good idea to make a cop look a fool..and saying you have a radar detector will probably hurt more than help..think man! do like I did pay the tic(I look at is a donation) and try to live with it. HATE IT FOR YA THOUGH!!!

lol....I guess all of us have gone thru this. He could of been using laser or something that your radar detector doesn't pick up. Second, you probably took your foot of the gas when you saw him, then looked down so 92 is proabaly about right (doesn't make much of a difference anyway).
I have gotten busted speeding many times and have no points. Call the number on the ticket and tell them you are pleading not guilty, go to court on the indicated date, before you see the judge you will speak with the prosecutor. Explain to him that you normally don't drive that fast and that you screwed up. They will lower or get rid of the points but you will have to pay a higher fine. It does however keep your insurance rates down. Good luck, e-mail me if you have any questions.

Yes, fight it. Especially since the penalties are so high. If radar detectors are legal in your state, then it may be helpful to note that it did not go off, but is could give him the idea that you are a chronic speeder.
You may want to look into your local traffic laws and see what proof the police are required to use for speeding citations and ask them to supply that proof.

The worst thing that can happen, you pay the normal ticket... but in my experience, if you sit down with a magistrate/judge they will always reduce the offence. And even 3 points and $120 would be worth the work you put into it.

radar detectors do not detect vascar! in some states radar detectors are illeagal..so I wouldn't say anything about having one...it will be your word against the cops...sorry but the courts view the cops as ALWAYS right. at best you may get the speed reduced and some points shaved but don't count on it.

Your use of a radar detector would probably cause the judge to assume you had intention of breaking the law. I wouldn't use that.
On the other hand, the officer is required to show you the radar display showing he clocked you at that speed.
It is probably a good idea to seek legal counsel on this one, you should be able to beat it.

speed zone says 65?!.....then you do 65 NOT 92 ! rigt now you have admitted to guilty especially when it is on the web site! (not so smart) you also admitted of speeding when you passed the cop at 83mph. This can be taken to court. so pay the bill, take the points and..........SLOW DOWN!!!
speed kills.... you are driving a weapon. Driving is a privaledge.....not a right.

Lazer speed gun doesn't show up on radar detector.

You won't win.

I'm lazy. I'd enroll in online traffic school to reduce my points, and I'd pay the ticket.
