No food is forbidden for a nursing mother. Sometimes your baby will have a sensitivity to something you ate, but it will have to be trial and error. Something that you ate one day that gave your baby gas or stomach pain may not produce the same reaction if you try it again in a few weeks. A well-balanced diet with lots of veggies, some fruit, lean meat and other protein foods, balanced with whole grains and low-fat or fat-free milk products plus drinking lots of water will keep you healthy. As with any healthy diet, fat and sweets are not forbidden, but eaten in moderation are fine. Your body is able to produce breast milk regardless of what you eat or don't eat. So, the goal is to keep yourself healthy so you can keep your baby healthy.

The "Best odds diet". You can find it in the book "What to expect the first year". I also think it is in the book "What to expect when you are expecting". As long as you are eating healthy foods from the food pyramid, and drinking enough water, you are fine. The only thing that is forbidden is drugs (obviously!) Caffeine is okay - two servings a day.

Well definitely avoid caffeine! I always wondered why my daughter would not sleep very well and then finally after many months, found the connection between caffeine and nursing.
Good foods to eat are anything healthy. Oatmeal boosts your supply like crazy and veggis give your milk extra vitamins. If your baby is acting colicky, she may be sensitive to dairy, so you would want to avoid milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. Try not to eat alot of junk food but instead choose plenty of protein and veggis and balance it out with carbs.
Be sure and continue to take your prenatal vitamins and drink plenty of water!!!

You can eat just about anything when breastfeeding. Drink plenty of milk (although some will say it doesn't help.) Eat fruits and vegetables, but beware, your child may give you fits about certain foods. Cruciferous veggies, like cauliflower, broccoli, etc., may make baby gassy, so eat them with caution. My son would get a bad diaper rash and scream when I ate tomatoes. You'll figure out what your baby likes and what he cannot handle. Do make sure you stay hydrated with water, and limit caffeine. Take care! P.S. I've also heard oatmeal helps you make more milk.

I always had luck with cereal, believe it or not. The more "whole grain" the better (like Cheerios or Wheaties). Also, keeping hydrated is a good idea (duh!).
The one thing my doctor DID tell me was OK was a beer once a day. I didn't have one EVERY day, but once in a while. And I did notice a difference in the quality of the milk (richer).
Good luck to you and your little one!
