I want to make a van der graaf generator. So I want to find a smooth metal sphere between 10 and 30mm in diameter. I fact it does'nt even need to be spherical. Egg shape or even a donut / torus would do, as long as it is roundish and has no points. I am in the UK, so it needs to be available here. It also needs to be cheap. Any ideas of where to look or things to adapt would be very welcome.

I can give you its proper name to google. It's call a "corona ball". Corona balls and rings are used in the power industry for high voltage applications, so you may find something there. It's also possible that someone makes a hemispherical stainless steel salad bowl or something. You could braze two together.

Follow up.

I noticed an aluminum corona ball on a substation today at least 15 cm in diameter. It was actually more of a cylinder with a hemispherical end.
