put 250 under 525.

start from the right and work backwards.

5-0=5
2-5=cant do somake the 2 a 12 and add 1 to the column on the left. 12-5= 7
5-3=2

525 = 500 + 20 + 5
250 = 200 + 50 + 0

If you minus 250 from 525,

525 = 500 + 20 + 5
-250 = -200 - 50 - 0
____ = ___________

Start from the right 5 - 0 = 5
20 - 50 cannot be. So we need to
borrow 100 from 500 and add it to
20 to make it 120.
500 becomes 400.

120 - 50 = 70
400 - 200 = 200
Add the difference : 200 + 70 + 5 = 275

So 525 - 250 is indeed 275

write 525 and 250 under it with a minus symbol next to them on the right, then you look at the 5 and the 0, the last numbers as you start from the right to the left! and so thats 5 - 0 which = 5, then you look at the 2 and the 5, thats 2 minus 5 which you cant do so you borrow a 1 from the 5 next to the 2 and put a line through it and write a little 4 next to the 5, then add the 1 that you took from the 5 and write it next to the 2 so you now have 12, so its now 12 - 5 which is 7 then you look at the remaining numbers which is the 4 (was a 5 but you took 1 away) and - the 2 which gives you 2, now you have the answer 275 and you workings out! sounds complicated but if you read it step by step and write it out your have your have your sum!

Well firstly, if you put the 25 from the 525 aside till the end. Which then leaves you with 500. Then you can take 250 from 500 which obviously is 250 as it is exactly half. But then you have to add the 25 you left aside at the beginning to your answer (250) and you get 275.

525 - 250

Think like this

5 Hundreds 2 Tens 5 Units minus
2 Hundreds 5 Tens 0 Units

So 5 Units minus 0 Units = 5 Units

2 Tens minus 5 Tens
Can't be done so 'borrow' 10 Tens {1 Hundred}

So 12 Tens minus 5 Tens = 7 Tens

Then 5 Hundreds minus 3 Hundreds (repay the 1 hundred you 'borrowed')

5 Hundreds - 3 Hundreds = 2 Hundreds

Write out fully in numbers 525 - 250 = 275

You want form -250 to - 525 or from -250 to 525? Its not the same. In the first case, you reason this the same way as you would reason from 250 to 525. But, in the second one, you have 250 from -250 to 0 and 525 more!

525
-250
-------

Start at the right side, and take 5 - 0 = 5
Next column is 2 - 5...you will need to 'borrow 10' from the left column to make 12 - 5 = 7
Then, in the left column you will have 4 - 2 = 2

Answer: 275
